Relaxation/Sedation Dentistry:
Taking Fear Out of the Picture
Some people are afraid of spiders or snakes. Others break out in a cold sweat at the thought of having to board an airplane. And some folks fear a trip to the dentist.
We can't help you with your fear of bugs, reptiles, or flying, but if a dental procedure fills you with anxiety, we've got two words that should put your mind at ease: Relaxation Dentistry. With Relaxation Dentistry, also known as oral conscious sedation, you are prescribed a sedative in pill form to take an hour before a scheduled procedure. You must have someone drive you to the office and back home again following your appointment. Upon arrival at our office, you'll be awake but drowsy and relaxed. We'll keep you comfortable with pillows and blankets, and use sunglasses to protect your eyes from the bright light. Although you will be in a state of deep relaxation, you will remain conscious and able to speak and respond.
Patients under oral conscious sedation are closely monitored at all times.
Though the sedative itself contains no numbing agent, because you are so relaxed - and because of our painless injection techniques - you will most likely have no recollection of your teeth being numbed. Upon returning home, the effects will wear off following a short nap, after which you will probably have little or no memory of your appointment. Relaxation Dentistry is safe and cost-effective. It is, however, not appropriate for every patient. Dr. Massaro will be happy to discuss Relaxation Dentistry with you in greater detail and determine whether you would be a good candidate.
